As parents, nothing matters more than our children's health. The annual flu season brings legitimate concerns, but getting your child vaccinated remains the most effective protection. This guide answers common questions to help you make informed healthcare decisions for your family.

1. Why do children need the flu vaccine more?

Children's developing immune systems make them more vulnerable to flu complications. The U.S. CDC recommends annual vaccination for all children over 6 months because it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, even if they still get sick.

2. When is the best time to get vaccinated? Is it too late now?

The best time is during autumn (October-December) before Hong Kong's flu season typically peaks (January-March). It takes about two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination. It's never too late to vaccinate while flu viruses are circulating.

3. Are there side effects from the flu vaccine?

Most side effects are mild and temporary, including:

  • Soreness or redness at the injection site
  • Mild fever or tiredness These usually resolve within 1-2 days and indicate the immune system is responding. Serious reactions are very rare.

4. How many doses of flu vaccine does my child need?

This depends on their age and vaccination history:

  • Children 6 months to 8 years needing their first flu vaccine: 2 doses, 4 weeks apart
  • Children 9 years and older: 1 dose annually
  • Previously vaccinated children: 1 dose annually

5. Is there Government Subsidy Programme for flu vaccination? How do we qualify?

Yes. Hong Kong's Vaccination Subsidy Scheme (VSS) helps cover costs for:

  • All children aged 6 months to under 18 years
  • Required documents: Parent & child's HKID card/ bith certificate
  • Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/ legal guardian

We maintain full transparency about vaccine availability. Our online booking system shows current stock and brands. All vaccines are stored under proper conditions, and our Registered Nurses verify expiration dates before administration.

8. My child had the flu last year. Do they still need the vaccine?

Yes. Flu viruses change each year, and immunity from previous infection or vaccination decreases over time. Annual vaccination provides protection against current strains.

9. What should we know before and after flu vaccination?

  • Before: Reschedule if your child has a fever
  • After: We recommend staying at our clinic for 15 minutes for observation. Ensure your child drinks fluids and gets adequate rest afterward.
  • For your peace of mind, we have prepared a comprehensive 2025/26 Step-by-Step Vaccination Guide with detailed instructions to walk you through the entire process.
